Milnerton Shooting Association: Defensive Shooting Rules

1. General Information

This shoot is officially an MSA club event and will count towards dedicated status, as well as medals and trophies at the end of the year.

The competition is now divided into three classes: Standard Class, Optic Class, and Open Class. Each class has specific equipment regulations to ensure fair competition.

All competitors must adhere to the rules outlined below and follow the safety protocols set by MSA and WCSU.

2. Safety and Competency Requirements

  1. Competency Check: All competitors must demonstrate safe draw and fire competency before being allowed to draw and fire on the range. A certificate will be issued upon successful completion. This check can be done on the competition day.

  2. Safety Protocols: All MSA and WCSU safety rules must be followed.

  3. Range Officer Commands: Competitors must always adhere to all range officer commands.

3. Equipment and Classifications Standard Class (Iron Sights Only)

  • Firearm must fit within a box measuring 225mm x 150mm x 45mm (with the magazine inserted).

  • Only iron sights are permitted. No optical sights or red dots.

  • No compensators or ported barrels allowed.

  • Typical firearms include Glock 17, Glock 34, Z88, Beretta 92, Colt 1911, Vector SP1.

  • Firearms must be carried in a concealable holster.

Optic Class (Red Dot Allowed, No Race Guns)

  • Any size firearm may be used, provided it has a red dot sight installed.

  • No compensators, ported barrels, or race gun modifications are permitted.

  • Similar firearms as in Standard class but apart from optics fitted ie red dot sight.

  • Intended for carry firearms with optics fitted.

Open Class (Unlimited Modifications, Race Guns Allowed)

  • No size or modification restrictions.

  • Red dot sights, compensators, extended magazines, and custom trigger work are all allowed.

  • This is the most open category, designed for competitors who wish to use highly customized firearms.

4. Sportsmanship and Conduct

  1. Major Factor Loads: To maintain fairness, competitors must use loads that meet a minimum power factor. If a competitor is found to be using sub-par loads, their score will be disqualified at the discretion of the range officer.

  2. Attitude and Integrity: Sportsmanship is a high priority. Any form of cheating or unsportsmanlike conduct will result in disqualification.

5. Equipment and Ammunition Recommendations

  • Competitors should bring at least two to three magazines.

  • It is recommended to bring enough ammunition to allow multiple runs through the course.

  • The course of fire typically requires 15 to 30 rounds per run, depending on the stage setup.

6. Event Timing and Logistics

  • The event starts between 08:15 and 08:30, depending on how many participants assist with setup.

  • Competitors are encouraged to arrive early to help set up the course.

By participating in this event, all competitors acknowledge and agree to abide by these rules. The MSA reserves the right to amend rules as necessary to maintain fair and competitive standards.
