Your first visit to a shooting range can feel daunting if you’re unfamiliar with protocols and procedures. Founders Range, Milnerton Shooting Association’s primary facility, welcomes newcomers and visiting shooters. Knowing what to expect before you arrive ensures a safe, enjoyable, and productive experience.
Founders Range is located approximately 40 kilometres north of Cape Town, accessible via the R27 near Atlantis. This 370-metre rifle range features 54 shooting benches, accommodating everything from precision target shooting to practical rifle disciplines. The facility represents one of the Western Cape’s premier shooting venues, serving competitive shooters, hunters, and sport enthusiasts.
Before your visit, understand that safety is the absolute priority at Founders Range. Closed shoes are mandatory—no sandals or open-toed footwear permitted due to spent brass falling on the range. Eye protection (ballistic-rated glasses) and hearing protection (foam inserts, muffs, or both) are required. While you may borrow hearing protection, bringing your own ensures optimal comfort during extended shooting sessions. Double hearing protection—foam inserts plus muffs—is highly recommended for first-time shooters unfamiliar with rifle noise levels.
Arrive early and proceed to the sign-in desk. Critically important: sign-in closes at 09:00. If you’re travelling from Cape Town, plan for traffic and allow substantial time. Sign-in after 09:00 cannot be accommodated due to safety protocols and range marshal scheduling.
Range fees are straightforward: MSA members pay R20 per session, while visitors pay R200. These fees cover range maintenance, facility improvements, and safety staff. First-time visitors often find the visitor fee reasonable given the facility quality and professional range operations.
During sign-in, you’ll provide your contact details and shooting information. Be prepared to discuss what you’re shooting (rifle type and calibre), your experience level, and your shooting objectives. This information helps range staff assign appropriate benches and ensure proper safety supervision. If you’re a first-time shooter, inform staff—they’ll provide orientation and assign a bench where a Range Marshal can monitor your initial range time.
The Range Marshal is the highest authority on the range during operating hours. Pay careful attention to their instructions and follow them without hesitation. Range Marshals enforce safety protocols, manage range activity, and ensure every shooter leaves safely. Their decisions are final.
Bring adequate ammunition for your session. While ammunition isn’t sold at Founders Range, you can transport ammunition you’ve purchased elsewhere. Ensure all ammunition is appropriate for your firearm and stored safely during transport.
Essential items to bring include: your firearm (obviously), appropriate ammunition, eye and hearing protection, a shooting mat or towel if you prefer padding at the bench, cleaning materials for post-shooting firearm maintenance, water for hydration, and sun protection. The range is exposed with minimal shade during summer months.
Firearms handling follows strict protocols. When moving to or from the firing line, keep firearms pointed in safe directions (typically downrange or at the ground ahead). Never point firearms at other shooters, and always keep the muzzle behind the firing line when not actively shooting. Chamber checks are routine—don’t take offense if a Range Marshal or other shooters ask to verify your firearm is unloaded.
First-time shooters often underestimate the physical and mental demands of shooting. Extend your initial sessions to 2-3 hours maximum, allowing breaks for hydration, rest, and to process feedback about your technique. Fatigue degrades safety and shooting performance.
The shooting community at Founders Range is welcoming and supportive. Experienced shooters understand that everyone was once a beginner. Don’t hesitate to ask questions about equipment, technique, or facility operations—you’ll find most shooters eager to share knowledge.
Plan your first visit strategically. Midweek mornings typically see fewer shooters than weekends, making them ideal for first-time visitors wanting a less intimidating environment. Friday evenings and weekends attract high volume, which can create a more chaotic feel for newcomers.
After your session, remove all spent brass and debris from your bench, and ensure your firearm is properly cleaned and secured. Leave the range in the same or better condition than you found it—this collective responsibility maintains Founders Range as a premier facility.
